People Publisher FAQ
How do I get an account?
To obtain an account for the People Publisher please submit a request, or call the IT Help Desk at 606.783.5000..
What are the requirements?
You must be enrolled/employed at MSU with a valid MSU ID and Web Pin. The browser requirements are Internet Explorer 5.5 or later, Mozilla/Firefox 1.0 or later, and Netscape 6.0 or later. The publisher supports Windows, Macintosh, and Linux platforms. JavaScript must be enabled.
How much web space do I get?
The default amount of space is 20MB (megabytes) for students and 40MB (megabytes) for employees.
Can I have FTP?
FTP access will not be given to accounts on the people publisher.
Can I use PHP?
No, PHP (preprocessor hypertext) is not supported for publisher accounts.
Do I need Front Page or Dreamweaver?
No, Microsoft Front Page or Macromedia Dreamweaver are not required. Publisher has included a robust browser based web editor called FCKeditor. However you can still use other software to create your site and upload the files through the publisher. Please be sure to upload all necessary images, stylesheets, and JavaScript that the page requires.
Will templates be available to create sites quickly?
Yes, multiple templates are available as an option with the Publisher.
Are SSI (server side includes) supported?
Yes, to use server side includes please use the following formats.
To include files in the same folder:

Why do I get a Forbidden: You don't have permission to access, when loading
my Web site
Your web site must have a default file or "homepage" with a filename of "index.html". If this file does not exist in your home directory you will recieve a forbidden error message.
What is this Robots.txt file in my folder? (students only)
All student accounts by default have this file that prevent search engines from indexing your site, and prevents your site from displaying in the Studen Index.. If you would like your content to be searchable and appear in the student index, please delete this file.

Copyright
In accordance with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (full-text link), only use images that you can document that you have the rights to use. For example, you may not used copyrighted images like the Nike logo, but you may use free/shared images like Microsoft ClipArt graphics. For audio clips, no more than 10 seconds of a work may be used without express written permission from the copyright holder. All works (written documents, images, sound, video, etc.) used on a page that is not original to the author must adhere to the DMCA. Copyright violations on the Web are more severe, as each visit to a page is considered a copy.
